L-Train Skizze

Mike Svoboda/Anne-May Krüger: L-Train. A Ride on the Roller Coaster of Life (2027)

L-Train for female voice, two pre-recorded voices, live electronics, and field recordings explores the different stages of life we experience and the resulting diverse perspectives on our existence. By combining the live voice with two pre-recorded voices and embedding them within the sonic landscape, the composition creates a multi-perspective and ever-evolving view of events and stages such as childhood, adolescence, family life, and old age. The voices move not only within a sonic panorama but also along a near-far axis. The live electronics act as a mediator between the live voice, the pre-recorded voices, and the ambient sounds. The singer is positioned within a circle of the audience and, over the course of the one-hour performance, slowly completes a 360° rotation. This image represents life as a cycle, an almost imperceptible yet unstoppable movement. Accordingly, the one-hour piece is divided into the sections of spring, summer, autumn, and winter. The title – L-Train – refers, among other things, to this very movement with its sometimes abrupt highs and lows. The "L" stands on the one hand for life itself, but also for concepts that are essential to our lives: to learn, to love, loss. At the same time, the title plays on the actual 'L' train (elevated train) in Chicago, the composer's hometown.
